The Filecoin Foundation (FF) is excited to launch the Developer Grants Update series, which will bring you news and highlights from the Filecoin Foundation Developer Grants team. The first installment will provide an update on the current fiscal year (FY24), which begins in October 2023.
Proposal Overview
This year, we received proposals that demonstrated the innovation capabilities of our community and launched a number of grant projects from these proposals. Here are some highlights:
-
Filecoin x Unreal Engine 5 : Multi-frontend integration, which will introduce decentralized storage to its existing Unreal Engine blockchain plug-in through web3.storage and Filecoin payments.
-
Lava : An incentivized RPC pool, a framework for deploying multiple FVM-based applications using the public Filecoin RPC solution, with one-click deployment, payment and other functions.
-
Ghostdrive : User-side storage solution optimized with FVM integration for data upload, download and sharing.
-
Lighthouse FVM Tools : FVM-integrated SDK for uploading and downloading files on Filecoin.
-
TRANSFER Data DAO : An open collective trust organization that aims to create an encrypted file system and provide access to the worlds digital data archive.
We encourage everyone to continue to share ideas and help shape the future of the Filecoin ecosystem. Check out our funding criteria here to provide a reference for your proposal.
Project Review
To meet the needs of the evolving community and ecosystem, FF’s grants team is continually evolving grant opportunities and grant programs.
At the beginning of this fiscal year, we conducted a comprehensive review of our evaluation criteria and procedures for open grants . We made adjustments to prioritize funding for projects directly related to Filecoin. New projects can receive up to $50,000 in funding, focusing on these key areas: development tools, RD, new integrations, storage, retrieval, and Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM). At the same time, we implemented a two-round review process to strengthen the evaluation and ensure that evaluation feedback is collected from a wider range of stakeholders in the Filecoin ecosystem.
In May, the Filecoin Foundation launched the Documentation Enhancement Grants program, launching a $50,000 funding pool so that you can support the creation or improvement of network documentation.
Funding pool update
The FF Annual Report, published in February 2024, provides an extensive look at the projects FF supported during the previous fiscal year (FY’23).
In FY2024, we will continue to fund projects that move the ecosystem forward. In addition to 24 active projects (as of August 2024), we have multiple projects that have completed funding milestones, including:
-
IPFS VS Code extension : This extension is now live and available for users interested in installing and deploying the IPFS node daemon in their VS Code environment.
-
LabDAO + Bacalhau Integration : This integration provides scientists with a low-cost, easily accessible, and transparent environment for useful data workloads on Filecoin and IPFS.
-
Hamster : This tool ensures that developers who are passionate about security and privacy have a full range of development and automation experiences for Filecoin deployments.
-
Spheron : Heroku for decentralized storage, the protocol is versatile and supports a wide range of scalable storage frameworks, enough to meet all types of developer and business needs. 5.ipEHR : This tool enhances critical data management in the healthcare industry.
FIL-RetroPGF-1
Several Filecoin-funded projects have been nominated in the retroactive public goods funding program FIL-RetroPGF , including: Portrait, Storswift, IPLD proly Trees, and Fileverse. Funding allocation is determined by badge holders voting. If you want to learn more, you can learn more through this связь .
Key areas and outlook for the third quarter
As we draw to a close of this fiscal year, our team is actively working to increase the effectiveness and impact of our grant program within the Filecoin ecosystem.
We will continue to optimize the grant process, from new ways to speed up decision-making, streamline the application and review process, to strengthening communication channels that can improve efficiency and transparency. We are creating data-driven impact reports as a core tool for evaluating and understanding project results. To increase project visibility and attract high-quality proposals from the community, we are expanding communication channels, including organizing monthly AMAs and publishing quarterly reports on developer grants.
The Impact of the Filecoin Foundation on the PL Ecosystem: A Closer Look
FF and Filecoin Grants both play a key role in driving developer engagement, project activity, and collaboration within the Protocol Labs Network (hereinafter referred to as “PLN”). The following are the main research results of the (PLN) open source economy:
-
Developer Engagement: FF-funded projects have a higher ratio of full-time to part-time developers (approximately 1:1) compared to the broader PLN community (approximately 1:3), demonstrating a strong developer commitment to development.
-
Total number of active developers: Combining developers working on PLN projects and developers receiving FF funding, as of the latest report, there are 719 active developers in the ecosystem, demonstrating a strong developer community contributing to various initiatives.
-
Network collaboration: An analysis of GitHub contributors revealed that some central projects in the ecosystem (such as Celestia, Filecoin, and lib p2p) have important common contributors, indicating close collaboration and interconnection between them.
Additionally, in the latest community activity report, grant recipient submissions on GitHub continue to maintain a high level, highlighting the active contributions of grant recipients and their key role in the continued development and innovation of the Filecoin ecosystem.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication. Stay tuned for more updates and exciting developments!

Original author: Haotian (X: @tmel0211 ) Although this round of Crypto bull market is still in its prime, looking at the distorted values of innovation is useless in the primary market and MEME everything in the secondary market, I feel like its the darkest moment. Why? 1) Originally, I was immersed in the big and small things in the industry all day long, fearing to miss any technological innovation. However, in the past two months, under the influence of garbage market sentiment, there are very few updates from project parties, new narrative hotspots, etc. that can make people excited. Maybe its because of the lack of innovation, maybe its because the repetitive narratives have numbed people, or maybe its because the disconnect between the primary and secondary markets makes people…
